ACNE & GLYCEMIC INDEX...

BEST ACNE FACIAL TREATMENT CHICO   916SKIN - ACNE CLINIC

A high carbohydrate diet can worsen the effects of acne. Research points out that high carb diets spike insulin, which in turn increases hormone levels creating imbalances. These hormonal imbalances act to trigger acne in those genetically predisposed to the condition.

Researchers also point out that not all carbohydrates have the same effect on blood sugar. Certain carbohydrates are digested more slowly causing a more gradual rise in blood sugar. To help the body regulate hormones, a slow gradual rise is preferred to a spike.

The glycemic index was developed by researchers to rank foods and beverages based on the speed in which they are digested and thus how they influence blood sugar. Foods that have a high glycemic index ranking are foods that are metabolized quickly and spike the blood sugar. Whereas, low glycemic index foods are those that breakdown slowly and cause a gradual rise in blood sugar.  Carbohydrate-based foods that contain fat and or fiber take longer to digest, and as a result, are generally lower on the glycemic index. To help manage acne and for overall optimal health, the most healthful diet is one that is low in glycemic index.
